Naming your startup.

While choosing a name for your startup, you should note that your name creates the first impression about the brand. It should connect to the audience and attract attention while being mentioned. The name chosen for your startup should also capture the essence of your business.

These are the factors to consider while naming your startup.

Keep It Simple and Short (KISS)

While choosing a name for your startup, always keep it in mind to apply the KISS principle, that is Keep It Simple and Short. Avoid picking a name that would be difficult to pronounce and spell, this would also make it easier to stick in people’s mind because you wouldn’t want to be stuck with the problem of correcting people everytime they mispronounce or misspell your name.

Also, choose names that aren’t limiting or too specific because of possible future expansion of the startup.

Research Names

After finding the preferred options for your startup, conduct extensive research to see that your options aren’t already being used by other companies or they are already being trademarked. You wouldn’t want to start dealing with legal disputes in the early days of your startup.

While researching, if you are going to use a local name try to find out that it doesn’t have an offensive or abusive meaning in other languages.

Research Social Media Profile

After you have decided on a particular, the next step is to take a social media swipe. Check all social media platforms to see if there is any business or person using the name or something similar.

One thing you would want to have about your social media profile would be consistency, the handles for your business on social media platforms have to be consistent. This would help with your SEO boost which would make it easier for people to find you.

Register a Domain Name

As soon as you choose a name, go secure a domain name for the startup, you can use .com, .net, .org, etc. However, if someone already possesses your domain name, you can reach out to the owners and see if they are willing to sell the domain name. But if they are unwilling to sell or it is quite expensive, you can change your startup name.

Here are some of the sites where you can check if your proposed domain name is available: bluehost.com, namecheap.com, etc.

Naming your startup can be a fun and challenging process but it would be worth it. You might not come up with original ideas, so far it is well modified and fine-tuned and void of copycats, you are good to go.
